Fine quality, early Victorian, oak bank of drawers with locking stile. The four drawers of a lovely hand-cut dovetailed construction with oak linings and ebony knob handles. Bearing the makers label ‘Balls, Forman & Co. 170 Oxford Street.’ With locking side bar to lock all drawers

Balls, John & Co.                                                                                                                                              Bird St and Oxford St, London; cabinet maker, upholder and appraiser (fl.1809-55)  From 1855 the firm traded with a partner named Forman. A Regency dwarf breakfront open bookcase bears the trade label of ‘Balls & Co., 170 Oxford St. … & 10,11,12, & 13 Bird St’.  Recorded on a bill of 25 August 1840 as an orator with George Cossar, carpenter, of Walthamstow, Essex. An upholsterer named Balls, was paid 6s in June 1839 by 3rd Lord Braybrooke of Audley End, Essex. A mahogany writing table, c.1855, bearing the same label is recorded.
